2019 has been a dark year for most businesses evident from the huge numbers of retrenched and fired employees as management decry hostile economic environment, Nakumatt hypermarket has not been spared despite having already shut a score of stores across Kenya.

It has since emerged that Nakumatt Megacity in Kisumu had not paid its employees for three months and though they struggled to make ends meet, they were hopeful they would be paid as the mega supermarket was fully stocked.

The Nakumatt Mega City employees are now demanding to be paid their three months’ salary arrears after the Nakumatt surprised them with a shutdown of the Kisumu outlet on Monday, 25th November 2019.

The 37 Nakumatt Mega City employees have also sought help from the Ministry of Labour to compel the retailer to pay up the dues in the next week.

Nakumatt Mega City employees say their contracts which were set to expire in January 2020 have been terminated without a notice as required by the law.

The 37 now-former employees of the shutdown Kisumu Nakumatt Mega have blocked the transfer of stock from Kisumu to Nairobi for the last six days as they demand for their three-month salaries.

Micholo Ochieng’, Chief supervisor noted they too were surprised last Thursday when the management told them not to open the store to customers on Monday the 25th of November 2019.

Ocheing said that they sought to know when and how their dues would be paid to which an answer was not provided.

“We have sought help from labor offices in Kisumu who have in turn summoned the management and directed them to pay the workers before winding up,” Ochieng’ said on the shutdown of the Kisumu Nakumatt Mega.

The now shut Nakumatt Mega City was the last of the hypermarket’s remaining outlet in Kisumu. Nakumatt now has only five outlets in Kenya with half of them already struggling to remain afloat.
