Panic As KCPE Top Performers Miss Out On Desired Schools

The joy of receiving top marks, in the just-concluded KCPE, being carried on the shoulders amidst jubilation songs and dance has been cut short barely a fortnight since the results were announced with most missing out of their desired schools.

Over 30,000 candidates who sat the KCPE have missed out on their dream schools with the Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha saying the School Selection Committee had to decide schools for an estimated 300,000 students.

CS Magoha noted that there is a clear lack of guidance when it comes to selecting secondary schools that those who sit KCPE hope to join adding that parents need to be part and parcel of the process of making the decision.

Among the top disappointed students is Meru’s KCPE Top Candidate who hoped to secure a slot at Mang’u high school but was instead invited to join Murang’a high school which is equally great but not his choice.

Pangani Girls was by far the most preferred school in Kenya, with a total of 110,000 girls seeking to join it despite its capacity of 336 only.

Alliance Girls was the second most preferred Girls School with 92,067 candidates choosing it despite its capacity of 334 slots.

The year 2020 will see more students admitted to National Schools than witnessed in 2019 with 2020’s number of students admitted to National Schools standing at 31,337 from a previous 29,000.

It has been established previously that a good school is one where the student settles and maximizes their potential and when a parent openly displays dislike for the school their child is invited to, then it is bound to affect their attitude towards their studies.

As a majority of parents continue to air their disappointment on social media platforms, it is important for them to be keen on what attitudes they are fueling into their children as they could be influencing their children into thinking they cannot reach their maximum potential unless in certain institutions.
