Miraa Farmers to Be Consulted Before Publishing New Regulations

Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri has said that the new miraa regulations meant to streamline the sector are ready.

Mwangi Kiunjuri has said that even though the new miraa regulations are ready, they will not be published before farmers are consulted and all their views considered on the matter.

Speaking during the launch of a modern miraa market which is to be constructed at Muringene, Igembe Central, Kiunjuru said that he has given directives that the miraa regulations should not be gazetted until the views of all stakeholders are considered.

“The regulations are ready but I have directed that they should not be gazetted because we want a law that has been endorsed by miraa farmers who it will affect. We don’t want a situation where we come up with a law that people will oppose,” said Kiunjuri.

The miraa market in Igembe Central is expected to cost 25 million shillings for construction and another 15 million shillings for paving.

It is expected that around nine more miraa markets will be constructed in Maua, Laare and Mutuati, with miraa sheds and boreholes included in the construction.

Kiunjuri has said that he would liaise with Transport and Infrastructure CS James Macharia on how the Meru-Maua road would be tarmacked so as to boost the marketing of miraa.
