90-Kg Bag Of Maize At Ksh 4,000 In Kakamega, Ksh 3,600 In Bungoma

A 90-kilogram bag of dry maize is retailing between 4,000 and 4,200 shillings in most parts of Kakamega, up from between 3,600 and 3,800 shillings.
A 2-kilogram tin of dry maize in most parts of the same county is retailing between 100 and 130 shillings up from 80 shillings two months ago.
“Sometimes we have cash but we cannot find the maize like we used to. We buy from the lorries that come from Uasin Gishu at higher prices,” says one trader at the Shianda market.
In the neighboring county of Bungoma, the price of a 90-kilogram of dry maize spiked to between 3,600 and 3,800 shillings two weeks ago immediately after Uganda announced the closure of her borders.
A 2-kilogram tin of dry maize in most parts of Bungoma is retailing between 90 and 100 shillings with prices set to rise due to the high demand but little supply as a result of minimal movement occasioned by Covid-19.
Bungoma used to get most of its maize supply from Uganda through Busia at a lower price of at least 2,000 shillings for every 90-kilogram bag.
“For now, we wait for the supply from traders who come with lorries. Sometimes they don’t come because of Coronavirus. It is going to be tough,” laments Josephine Nekesa, from Misikhu market.
The price of dry maize in Kitale is a bit lower than in Kakamega and Bungoma. A 90-kilogram bag is going for 3,200 shillings the same as in Eldoret. In Nakuru, the price is the same as Bungoma at 3,800 shillings with the neighbors in Naivasha paying 4,000 shillings.
In most parts of Nairobi, a 90-kilogram bag of dry maize is going between 4,300 and 5,000 shillings with most residents resorting to sifted maize flour in shops that are a little cheaper than buying maize.
A 2-kilogram packet of maize flour in most supermarkets starts from 120 shillings with some brands going up to 200 shillings.
