Kenyans To Cough Out Ksh 1.1 Billion For MPs To Have A TV Station

If you thought your political leaders are done milking you dry, you are in for a rude shock for it appears you only stop being milked in Kenya if you are dead. You will soon be required to cough out 1.1 billion shillings to help MPs and Senators have their own 24-hour TV station.

Your honorable members feel the current TV channels are not giving them the coverage they deserve as Honorable Members and now want their own TV channel that will air their own views, sessions and give them the coverage that befits their status.

If approved by the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC), it will cost the taxpayer a whopping 300 million shillings every year, or 25 million shillings monthly to run the TV channel which the MPs say must be set up by the fire, by thunder.

“It is important to note that an additional cost of Sh25 million will be incurred on a monthly basis to cater for additional services to complement the services being offered in the existing contractual obligation,” said the report by the Broadcasting committee in parliament.

Currently, the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) airs sessions in both the National Assembly and Senate live. But the honorable members have rejected that offer. They want their own and the taxpayer must be forced to make this happen.

Of urgency, the parliament will need 524.6 million shillings to set up the TV channel and the remaining 600 million shillings to purchase the equipment for the TV channel. This is even as doctors and nurses plead to have a medical cover.

“The long-term implementation of the broadcasting program will mean that Parliament will fully provide personnel and equipment to produce and broadcast Parliament content,” said Justus Kizito, who chairs the Broadcasting committee.
