KEY POINTS

You must write a letter of resignation opting out of that particular party and then copying it to the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties, or write an objection to the party and copy the letter to the registrar's office.

On Friday, June 25, the Office of Data Protection Commissioner issued a statement urging Kenyans who were wrongfully listed as members of political parties to file complaints to be removed from the lists.

The move follows a recent development where some Kenyans realized that they had been registered as members of various political parties without their knowledge and consent. Since then, there have been more of these claims from other Kenyans.

During an interview on Thursday, the Data Commissioner Immaculate Kasait said that they had received over 200 complaints from individuals who had been registered to various political parties without their consent.

Kasai added that the Data Commissioner Office has been holding meetings with the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties to resolve this issue and ensure the names are deregistered from the political parties.

The Registrar of Political Parties said that there are two ways of ensuring you’re deregistered from these political parties, and in both ways, you must write to the specific political parties.

So, the first option requires you to write a letter of resignation opting out of that particular party and then copying it to the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties.

The other option is to write an objection to the party and copy the letter to the registrar’s office, where the matter will be followed up promptly to ensure you have been deregistered.

“If they don’t act, we follow up and ensure you are deregistered,” said the Registrar of Political parties, Ann Nderitu, during an interview with Citizen TV.

The registrar added that they are working closely with political parties to ensure that the issue of registering citizens without their knowledge does not happen again.
