16,000 Teachers To Get Promotions And Pay Rise, Here Is The New Salary

KEY POINTS
KNUT members will have a total salary increase of between Sh.8,000 and Sh.15,000, backdated to cover the last two tranches (2019 and 2020) they missed out like their counterparts in other unions enjoyed salary increases.
16,000 teachers who are members of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), who failed to get any benefits out of the 2017-2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) have a reason to smile because they are now set to get pay raises and promotions.
The move was after new KNUT Secretary General Collins Oyuu made up his mind to cancel all cases and charges against TSC as a way of promoting a better relationship between the two bodies.
The Ministry of Education released new guidelines on the registration of basic education institutions 16 months before the pioneer CBC class joins Junior Secondary School at Grade 7.
This comes at a time when the union has been struggling with the TSC on matters membership contributions, where their differences saw a large number of the union’s members migrate to other unions when others chose not to be members of any union.
The new Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), Collins Oyuu, indicated that KNUT members who were left out of salary increments during the third and fourth phases of implementation of 2017-2021 CBA will smile all the way to their banks.
KNUT members will have a total salary increase of between Sh.8,000 and Sh.15,000, backdated to cover the last two tranches (2019 and 2020) they missed out like their counterparts in other unions enjoyed salary increases.
Some of the teachers will also be promoted after they missed out on the opportunities when the rest of their colleagues were moved up during the implementation of the CBA.
Full implementation of 2017-2021 CBA saw primary school teachers who were previously on job group B5 earning a basic salary of Sh.21,345, moved to C1 with a salary increment of about 8,000 shillings.
Allowances for these teachers were also increased tremendously. They enjoyed a new house allowance of Sh.4,200, commuter of Sh4,000, and hardship allowance of 8,200 shillings.
It is important to note that headteachers and their deputies who were Knut members also lost greatly under the last phase of the CBA.
For example, a headteacher who was earning 45,000 shillings in June 2019 now earns 62,272 shillings as their Knut counterparts’ salaries remained unchanged.
