KEY TAKEAWAYS

SportPesa Foundation launched its Maternal Health Care support program in March 2021 to equip the maternity units of needy hospitals across Kenya to promote hospital deliveries that are deemed safer.

Kilifi County Teaching and Referral Hospital has become the first beneficiary of the SportPesa Foundation maternal healthcare support program in 2022, after receiving equipment to enable it to handle increasing demand for these services.

The hospital which handles an average of 600 deliveries in a month has today received beds for the maternity wards, delivery beds, patient trolleys, procedure trolleys, patient monitors, pulse oxymeters, vital sign monitors, and dopplers to improve its maternal health care services.

“We handle a high number of patients and deliveries in the maternity unit. The equipment we have received will help us manage them better because sharing of beds in the maternity ward has been a challenge and poses many risks of hospital-acquired infections among our clients,” said the hospital’s Nursing Officer in Charge, Mildred Santa.

Sportpesa presented the equipment to the hospital while urging corporates to support non-profit organizations and the government in improving affordable, quality, and easily accessible maternal health care to all communities across the country especially those in remote areas.

The support comes at a time when maternal healthcare services in Kenya are marred with myriads of challenges. Some of the challenges faced include inaccessibility to health facilities in most remote areas around the country, inadequate healthcare personnel, and lack of proper equipment to help deliver mothers.

In Kenya, the current Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) of 362 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, and the stillbirth rate of 23 deaths per 1000 live births is far below the target of 147 maternal mortality per 100,000 live births and 12 stillbirths per 1000 live births respectively.

The Kenyan government has made significant and purposeful efforts geared towards improving the lives of women over the years. But despite the visible efforts, Kenya still has a long way to go to achieve the goal of universal healthcare for all.

Thankfully, the private sector through companies such as Sportpesa is stepping in to ensure that healthcare, particularly maternal health is easily accessible and affordable.

Since the rollout of the Maternal Health Care program by SportPesa Foundation, the company has delivered much-needed assistance to the maternal health units of 20 hospitals in seven counties including Bomet, Narok, Tharaka Nithi, Meru, Nairobi, Homa Bay, and Kiambu counties.

It is also committed to other courses that benefit the community at large. For instance, in 2021, Sportpesa also engaged in sponsoring some football teams in Kenya, supporting girls for menstrual health, and donating kits for grassroots teams in various counties.
