KEY POINTS

According to TSC deputy director Antonina Lentoijoni teachers who do not achieve a mean grade of c+ in KCSE will be barred from teaching in secondary schools, even if they later obtain a degree.

The teachers’ service commission has ruled out the promotion of primary school teachers to secondary schools.

The commission stated that teachers will only be certified to teach in secondary schools if they achieve a grade C+(plus) in KCSE examinations.

According to TSC deputy director Antonina Lentoijoni teachers who do not achieve a mean grade of c+ in KCSE will be barred from teaching in secondary schools, even if they later obtain a degree.

Lentoijoni further added that all secondary school teachers would be limited to teaching only the subjects that they attained a C+ or higher in KCSE.

They would only be permitted to teach the subjects which they attained a C+ and above. This will go a long way to improve the quality of education, she said.

While the higher qualifications requirement has been criticized by many teachers, the commission believes that this will improve the education standards.

“TSC has raised the entry point of teaching to have the right kind of people offer quality education to our children, Lentoijoni.

This comes after the proposal made by the Secretary-General of KNUT Collins Oyuu, that primary school teachers be allowed to teach Grade 7 and 8 in junior secondary schools because most of them have a master’s degree.

The commission’s decision however prohibits any primary teacher from teaching secondary schools because they got either a C (plain) or C – (Minus).

Teachers who obtained their degrees through diploma certificates have been left in a dilemma since the decision of the commission.

Teachers with approved qualifications are the kind of people to ensure children receive a quality education according to TSC.
