At least 33 people are feared dead in the Tharaka Nithi accident involving a Modern Coast bus that plunged into River Nithi along the Meru-Nairobi highway on Sunday, July 24.

Details have emerged that the driver of the modern coast bus lost control of the vehicle as he approached the bridge.

According to Tharaka Nithi County Police Commander Donatha Chali, the driver was driving at high speed and ignored all the traffic signs directing motorists to slow down along the road.

Eyewitnesses also noted that the bus, which was traveling from Meru town when the accident occurred was at high speed before hitting the rail.

Kenya Red Cross Communications Manager, Peter Abwao also confirmed that those injured were recuperating at Chuka Level 5 hospital.

“The injured have been moved to Chuka Level 5 hospital and hospitals in Tharaka Nithi. The deceased have been taken to the funeral homes,” Abwao stated.

The accident happened just a month after National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) released a report on the increasing number of deaths following road accidents.

The latest stats indicate that at least 1,968 Kenyans have died as a result of road accidents across the country between January 2022 and June 2022. This is an increase from 1,800 Kenyans who died last year at the same period and time.

Speeding, according to police, has been the main cause of the crashes. Meanwhile, reckless driving, dangerous overtaking, drunk driving, drunk walking, drunk riding, and failure to use helmets among other issues have also been attributed to the increase in crashes.

Police have warned drivers using the roads to be more careful, especially at this time when most people are traveling upcountry in readiness for the August polls.

Safe driving can mean the only difference between life and death. Therefore, you should not overlook safety while on the road.
