The African Union, led by its Chair Moussa Faki Mahamat, has called on President William Ruto and Raila Odinga to talk and calm the escalating situation within the country as a result of nationwide protests by the Azimio Kenya One Alliance.

The calls from the African Union come even as Raila Odinga announced that the nationwide demonstrations will continue, two days a week; Mondays and Thursdays, until his demands are met by President William Ruto and his government.

“The Chairperson urges all stakeholders to exercise calm and engage in dialogue to address any differences that may exist in the supreme interest of national unity and reconciliation,” read part of the letter from the AU sent to newsrooms.

Raila Odinga and his brigade have so far held two major demonstrations, the latest one which turned ugly happened on Monday. The police were deployed all over the streets of Nairobi and Kisumu to counter-demonstrators who were pelting stones.

Police used teargas, live bullets, and water canons to disperse demonstrators in Kawangware, Mathare, and Kibera, areas where Raila Odinga has huge support. In Kibera, businesses were set ablaze, a school, a church, and a mosque on Monday night.

Armed criminals also attacked Northlands City, a huge piece of land belonging to President Uhuru Kenyatta and his family. They cut down trees, subdivided the land, constructed structures, and stole over 1,400 sheep that were on the farm.

Criminals also attacked Raila Odinga’s gas depot, Spectre, broke windows, and destroyed property worth millions before taking off using motorbikes and two unmarked cars. Raila has vowed to continue with the demonstrations weekly until his demands are met.
