50 Crops You Can Plant In Mbakalo, Tongaren, Bungoma County

The Soko Directory team is still pitching camp in Tongaren Constituency, Bungoma County to tell you what you can plant in this constituency, in every ward. Tongaren Constituency has 5 wards; Mbakalo, Milima, Naitiri/Kabuyefwe, Soysambu/Mitua, and Tongaren itself.

We are now in Mbakalo Ward. Many people in this ward are small-scale farmers who plant most of their crops for food. The most common crop in this ward is maize and sweet potatoes. Almost every homestead has these two crops specifically for food.

Flowers

Now, you will rarely see any farmer in this place planting flowers. But their soils support more than 10 varieties of flowers such as:

  8. Molucella

We have all seen how farmers in Kenya are making millions of shillings from avocados. Well, Mbakalo is a good place to start avocado farming. Other fruits include:

  1. Avocado
  2. Mangoes
  3. Pawpaw
  4. Sweet oranges
  5. Tangerine

For those with a calling for horticulture, Mbakalo ward is the place you should head right now. The soil is great and suitable for:

  1. Banana
  2. Cabbages
  3. French beans
  4. Mushroom
  5. Passion fruit
  6. Pumpkin

And just like their neighbors in Soysambu, farmers here can also plant miraa, the gold of Meru County. It happens that Miraa does so well in this place too. Here are the great commercial crops that one can plant here:

Indigenous vegetables (Kienyeji) also do so well in this place. They include:

  3. Slender leaf/mitoo

The major challenge in this place is the poor road network. When it rains, the roads are impassable and mostly inconvenience farmers. There is also a low purchasing power among locals. If you are planting for commercial purposes, then do it for urban areas such as Kitale and Eldoret.
