Nairobi Expressway To Be Closed Over The Weekend, Here’s Why

Moja Expressway Company announced the Temporary closure of the Nairobi Expressway over the weekend to make way for the Nairobi City Marathon which will take place on Sunday, July 2.

According to the statement they released, the company noted that the elevated highway will be closed beginning Saturday, July 1, at 10:00 pm till Sunday, July 2, at 4:00 pm. Motorists and other commuters have been advised to plan their journeys accordingly to avoid inconvenience.

“Please note that the Nairobi Expressway will be temporarily closed from Saturday, July 1 at 10:00 pm to Sunday, July 2, 2023, at 4:00 pm as we host the second edition of the Nairobi City Marathon,” said Moja Expressway company in a notice on Monday.

Over 50,000 vehicles use the road on a daily basis according to Moja Express Way, meaning that the closure will affect thousands of Kenyans.

Marathoners will run on the 27-kilometer stretch in an event organized by the Ministry of Sports in partnership with the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) among other sponsors.

“It is another chance to experience our great city as you run on the magnificent Nairobi Expressway,” the event sponsors touted the event.

The second edition of the marathon was launched on June 21 as it was set to feature different categories of competition including 42 kilometers full marathon, half marathon, and 6km fun run.

The start point for all the races will be at Aerodrome Road whereas the finish points will vary with the length of the races. The event will be flagged off at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday at 9:30 am with all participants expected to register at the same venue.
