Thousands of teachers employed by the Teachers Service Commission, TSC, are set to exit the service after reaching the mandatory retirement age. The teachers have their retirement letters long ago and it is only a matter of time before they leave the school premises.

At least 4,600 teachers will be existing TSC, of this, around 1,538 of them are school administrators, whose retirement is likely to make managing schools more difficult. According to TSC, north Eastern teachers will be allowed to continue serving after attaining retirement age.

“This mass retirement will result in a dire situation of teacher shortage in the region, which has been experiencing teacher shortage as a result of the recent exodus of non-local teachers.” TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia

As mitigation, TSC will hire retired educators from the area on a three-year contract basis and then prolong the retirement time for educators by three years after they reach the legal retirement age.

This is claimed to be extended to all retired teachers from other regions of the country who could be willing to serve in the North Eastern region. They are instructed to report to the County Directors of the aforementioned counties for data collecting and eventual deployment.

The existence of the teachers from the service will open employment opportunities for thousands of teachers who are unemployed.

Already the commission is in the process of recruiting additional tutors, with a county selection exercise for teachers and filling application for employment forms by successful candidates underway. TSC is similarly expected to replace teachers, who are needed to drive the tight curriculum schedule for next year.
