Kenyan Government To Recruit 24,000 More Teachers

The government, through the Ministry of Education, announced plans to recruit over 24,000 teachers across the country raising the number of teachers hired this year to 56,000.

According to the Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu, the recruitment exercise will kick off at the start of the 2023/2024 Financial Year. Machogu made the announcement during the 46th Annual Conference of the Kenya Secondary Heads Association (KESSHA) at Sheikh Zayed Hall in Mombasa.

CS Machogu assured school heads that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) would ensure equity during the deployment of the teachers.

TSC Chairperson Jamleck Muturi added to the following announcement of CS Machogu, saying that qualified teachers will be able to start applying for the positions starting the week beginning Monday, July 3.

In an effort to curb the shortage of teachers in the country, Muturi said that 4.6 billion shillings have been set aside for recruitment, 1 billion shillings for promotion, and 1.3 billion shillings for capacity building of teachers on the Competency-Based Curriculum, CBC.

Additionally, starting July 1, the government would not disburse capitation to schools through a quarterly system but instead, school heads will receive capitation in the ratio of 50:30:20 for the first, second, and third terms respectively

With an allocation of 628.6 billion shillings, the Ministry of Education has received the lion’s share of the 2023/2024 budget, about 27.4 percent of the government’s total budget estimates.

TSC received 316.7 billion shillings for the promotion, hiring, and training of teachers. Free primary education was allocated 12.5 billion shillings, and 65.4 billion shillings will go to free day secondary education which is inclusive of insurance and NHIF cover.

The treasury allocated 25.5 billion shillings to Junior Secondary Schools while 5 billion shillings was to cater for national exams waiver while the TSC allocated 4.8 billion shillings for the recruitment of 20,000 inter-teachers.

“I propose to the National Assembly to effect the budget allocation of Sh1.3 billion for the training of teachers on Competency-Based Curriculum and 400 million shillings for a digital literacy program and ICT integration in our secondary schools,” the CS for National Treasury said.
