Usawa Agenda Set To Launch The Much-Awaited FLANA Report

Usawa Agenda, a renowned Kenyan think tank championing equitable access to quality education is set to release its much-awaited 2023 Foundational Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (FLANA) on February 29, 2024.

The report’s release will take place at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), Nairobi, and is set to bring together stakeholders within and without the education sector in Kenya and beyond to deliberate on the Kenyan state of basic education in the wake of a raft of changes.

Usawa Agenda is a not-for-profit organization registered in Kenya with a mission to promote systems change for education and justice for all through research, innovation, and evidence-based stakeholder engagement.

The organization conducted a household-based assessment of literacy and numeracy skills among children aged 6-15 years with the findings set to be released to the public this coming Thursday.

Usawa examined the influence of key factors such as educational policies, school, and home factors on learning outcomes within the basic education sector.

In 2023, Usawa Agenda conducted a foundational literacy and numeracy assessment that involved visiting over 39,000 households where we assessed over 44000 children and 1973 primary schools spread across all 47 counties in Kenya.

“Standardized tests and participatory methodologies were used to gather information from pupils, teachers, and parents. We have finalized the analysis of the data and will be releasing the findings to stakeholders at KICD on February 29, 2024,” said Usawa in a statement.
