Usawa Agenda To Lead Kenyans In Marking The International Day Of Education

Usawa Agenda, a think tank championing equitable access to quality education, has organized a webinar where local and international stakeholders will discuss education and justice as they join the rest of the world in marking this year’s International Day of Education.

Coming on January 24, 2024, this will be the sixth anniversary of marking the day set aside by the United Nations General Assembly. The day is observed across the whole world to reflect on education and what needs to be done to maintain peace.

The day is set aside by the UN General Assembly to celebrate the role of education in peace and development, which makes this year’s theme: “learning for lasting peace”, apt for the much-needed reflection on this occasion.

This year’s celebration are coming at a time when almost all corners of the earth are engulfed in raging violent conflicts, with an estimated quarter of the world’s population living in conflict-afflicted areas, greatly affecting access to education for millions of children.

At the same time, in Kenya, a wave of unprecedented femicide is sweeping across the country, with reports of women being killed coming almost daily. Yet this is also the time when the world in general and Kenya in particular, boasts of the highest literacy levels than ever before.

“This contradiction calls for introspection. We are invited to pause and ask ourselves tough questions about how we have conceived, packaged, and delivered education to generations of people across the country.

And whether what we have hitherto called education is comprehensive and just enough to deliver lasting peace for all humanity,” said Usawa Agenda in a statement.

To make this day and discussions a success, Usawa Agenda has put together a panel of experts and stakeholders within and without the education sector to dissect the subjects. Emmanuel Manyasa, Executive Director, of Usawa Agenda will be the Moderator of the day.

Other experts will be, Darius Mogaka, Director, of Higher Education at the Ministry of Education, Kenya, Teresa Otieno, CEO, FAWE Kenya, Leila Ehsani, Curriculum Developer, University of Lilongwe, and Kennedy Kyeva, Treasurer, Kenya Primary School Heads Association and head, Westlands Primary.
