Government Announces Recruitment of Public University Councils And Chairpersons

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has announced the recruitment of chairpersons and members of councils for public universities and constituent colleges.

According to Higher Education Principal Secretary Dr. Beatrice Inyangala, candidates applying for the position of chairperson must hold a PhD from a recognized university, have proven leadership and management experience, and meet the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution.

For those seeking to serve as members of university councils, a minimum of a master’s degree (excluding executive master’s degrees) from a recognized university is required, along with leadership and management experience and compliance with Chapter Six of the Constitution.

Kenya currently has 37 chartered public universities and six public university constituent colleges. The government is planning reforms in the sector, including leadership changes in these institutions.

A notice from the Ministry of Education’s State Department for Higher Education and Research outlined the recruitment process, emphasizing that applicants must not be public servants or active faculty members of any public or private university.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to present the following documents during the interview:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • National Identity Card or valid passport
  • Academic certificates and relevant testimonials
  • Commission for University Education (CUE) recognition/equation certificate for foreign qualifications

Successful candidates will also need to submit clearance certificates from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB), the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), and a credit reference bureau.

Interested individuals must submit an application letter stating the position they are applying for, along with their CV and a copy of their national ID or passport. Applications should be sent to the Ministry of Education by March 4.
