Kenya Met Warns Kenyans To Brace For Continuous Rain In The Following Regions

The Kenya Meteorological Department, Kenya Met, has released a comprehensive five-day weather forecast warning that various parts of the country will experience a mix of rain, thunderstorms, cold weather, and strong winds beginning Thursday, June 26, through Monday, June 30, 2025.

In its official statement, Kenya Met indicated that rainfall activity is expected to persist in several regions, particularly in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, parts of the Rift Valley, and along the Coastal strip. These areas are likely to receive moderate to heavy rainfall, especially in the afternoons and evenings, accompanied by thunderstorms in localized zones.

The department specifically highlighted that major towns, including Nairobi, Nyeri, Eldoret, Kisumu, and Nakuru, will experience chilly and cloudy conditions during the morning hours, followed by rainfall and thunderstorms as the day progresses. The mornings will be characterized by overcast skies and mist in some areas, which may reduce visibility and slow down transport activities.

In Nairobi and its surrounding counties, residents should expect intermittent light showers during both the morning and afternoon hours. The daytime temperatures are forecasted to range between 25°C and 27°C, while nighttime temperatures could dip significantly, dropping to as low as 6°C in some areas, particularly in higher altitude zones such as Limuru and parts of Kiambu and Nyandarua.

The Kenya Met also issued a wind advisory for residents living along the Coastal region, North Eastern, and parts of South Eastern Kenya. According to the forecast, strong easterly winds are expected to sweep across these regions, with speeds projected to exceed 25 knots (approximately 46 kilometers per hour)

These conditions pose potential hazards to small boats, fishermen, and outdoor events, prompting the department to caution residents and seafarers to exercise extra vigilance and take necessary safety measures.

In the Coastal towns of Mombasa, Malindi, and Lamu, scattered showers are expected, particularly on Thursday and Monday. The days in between will feature sunny intervals, creating a fluctuating pattern of wet and dry weather. Daytime temperatures in these areas are expected to hover between 30°C and 31°C, offering relatively warm conditions despite the anticipated showers.

The forecast indicates that the Lake Victoria Basin, including counties such as Kisumu and Kakamega, will be marked by frequent afternoon thunderstorms throughout the five days. These storms may be heavy in isolated areas and could lead to flash floods in low-lying regions. Nights will remain largely partly cloudy, with nighttime temperatures staying around 22°C to 24°C and daytime highs reaching up to 28°C.

In contrast, the northwestern counties such as Turkana, West Pokot, and Samburu will largely remain dry and sunny throughout most of the forecast period. However, light showers are expected to develop in isolated areas over the weekend. Daytime temperatures in these regions will be on the higher side, rising to 36°C, accompanied by low humidity.

Meanwhile, northern counties like Mandera and Garissa will experience consistently hot and sunny conditions, with maximum daytime temperatures expected to range between 36°C and 37°C. Despite the high temperatures, no significant rainfall is expected in these areas during the forecast window.

In the Lower Eastern counties of Kitui and Machakos, residents should prepare for cloudy and cool mornings that will gradually give way to sunshine by midday. The nights are expected to be cold and partly cloudy, with minimum temperatures dropping to between 10°C and 12°C.

As the country braces for this fluctuating and at times extreme weather pattern, the Kenya Met has urged Kenyans to remain cautious, particularly during periods of strong winds and heavy rainfall. Those living in flood-prone areas are advised to monitor local advisories and avoid crossing flooded roads or bridges.

The department also reminded farmers to take advantage of the ongoing rains for their agricultural activities, but to protect crops from possible damage caused by flooding or strong winds. Similarly, transport operators and event organizers are encouraged to plan with the forecast in mind to minimize disruptions.

This latest weather outlook is part of the department’s ongoing efforts to provide timely and accurate forecasts to help citizens make informed decisions and safeguard lives and property.
