Kenya Met Forecasts Rainfall In Several Regions Over The Next Seven Days

The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued its latest weather forecast, warning Kenyans across various parts of the country to prepare for continued rainfall and varying weather patterns throughout the week.
The detailed outlook, released on Monday, June 16, outlines expected weather conditions from Tuesday, June 17, to Saturday, June 21, and affects several regions including the Highlands both east and west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the Coastal region, as well as parts of the South-eastern Lowlands and North-western Kenya.
According to the forecast, residents living in the central highlands — including Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, and the capital city Nairobi, should expect a generally cool and cloudy start to their days for most of the forecasted period. While most mornings will remain dry with sunny intervals, Tuesday is an exception, with light rainfall predicted in a few areas during the morning hours.
Afternoon and night-time showers are anticipated throughout the week across these counties, bringing some relief from the cloudiness. However, the nights of Thursday, Friday, and Saturday are expected to remain partly cloudy and dry. Temperatures in this region are forecasted to dip as low as 6°C, signaling chilly conditions, particularly in high-altitude areas. The maximum temperature is expected to reach up to 27°C, offering some warmth during the day.
Counties in the South-eastern Lowlands, namely Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta, along with the inland areas of Tana River County, will largely experience sunny and dry days throughout the week. According to the Meteorological Department, Friday and Saturday afternoons may bring isolated showers in a few places, while nights will generally remain partly cloudy.
These areas will experience relatively warm temperatures, with daytime highs of up to 31°C, while night-time temperatures are expected to drop to around 9°C, making for significant day-night temperature contrasts.
For those living along the coast, particularly in Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, and the coastal parts of Tana River County, the forecast predicts scattered showers during the mornings and afternoons on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Conditions are set to improve toward the end of the week, with Friday and Saturday expected to remain sunny and dry throughout the day.
However, isolated showers are still likely on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Temperatures along the coast will be warm and humid, with maximum temperatures of about 31°C, and minimum night temperatures hovering around 22°C.
Counties situated in the Lake Victoria Basin and the Rift Valley, including Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot, are in for a wet week, with day-long rainfall and thunderstorms expected across multiple days.
The Kenya Met Department warns residents in these counties to stay alert for heavy showers accompanied by lightning and thunder, which could potentially lead to localized flooding or disruption of outdoor activities.
The temperatures in these areas will remain moderate, with daytime highs of about 30°C, while the coldest temperatures could drop to around 9°C during the early mornings and nights. In the North-western counties of Turkana and Samburu, the weather will be characterized by scattered rainfall during both the day and night throughout the week.
Despite the rainfall, these counties are expected to experience some of the highest temperatures in the country, with maximum temperatures soaring to 36°C. The minimum temperatures will hover around 8°C, creating sharp fluctuations in daytime and nighttime weather conditions.
For residents in the arid and semi-arid regions of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo, the weatherman predicts a predominantly dry week. These counties will experience sunny intervals and partly cloudy skies throughout the forecast period, with minimal to no rainfall expected.
Temperatures in this region will also remain high, with maximums reaching up to 31°C, and minimum temperatures staying relatively high at around 23°C, in line with the usual hot and dry conditions of Kenya’s north-eastern frontier.
The Kenya Meteorological Department is advising the public to take note of the weekly forecast and plan their activities accordingly. Farmers, commuters, school administrators, and those in flood-prone areas are particularly urged to remain vigilant and make necessary adjustments in anticipation of the weather conditions.
The Department continues to monitor the evolving weather patterns and has assured the public of timely updates in case of significant changes in the forecast. Citizens are encouraged to follow official channels and advisories for accurate and reliable information.
