Kenya Met Forecast Rain For Several Counties Despite Current Dry Spell

The sun’s out, the skies look clear, but don’t put the umbrella away just yet. The Kenya Meteorological Department, Kenya Met, says several counties should brace for rain over the next five days, even though much of the country is currently enjoying dry, sunny conditions.

The forecast covers Sunday, August 9 through Thursday, August 13. Four counties in particular stand out for notable rainfall: West Pokot, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu and Nandi.

West Pokot kicks things off with moderate afternoon showers on Sunday and Monday. That continues into Tuesday, before easing to lighter rain on Wednesday.

By Thursday, though, the skies should finally clear. It’s a fairly similar story next door in Trans Nzoia: moderate afternoon showers to open the week, then lighter rain settling in for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Uasin Gishu will get three straight days of moderate afternoon showers, from Sunday to Tuesday, before sunny intervals take over for the rest of the week. Nandi’s pattern is a bit more scattered: moderate showers on Sunday and Tuesday, with lighter rain filling in the gaps on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Further west, Kericho residents can expect a lighter touch: afternoon showers on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, with a dry break on Tuesday. Kakamega is looking at light afternoon showers nearly every day this week, plus an extra round of light rain Wednesday morning before the sun breaks through.

Bungoma will see light afternoon showers from Sunday through Wednesday, with things clearing up by Thursday. And in Nyandarua, it’s a mixed bag: afternoon showers on Sunday and Tuesday, and light morning rain creeping in on Monday and Thursday.

It’s not just about rain, though; it’s about to get cold too. Kenya Met is also flagging cold, cloudy weather for a longer list of counties: Nairobi, Kajiado, Kiambu, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Nyeri, Machakos, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, and Meru.

If you’re in Nyandarua, brace yourself. Nights there could drop as low as 7°C on Monday, 6°C on Tuesday, and back to 7°C by Thursday, easily some of the coldest temperatures in the forecast. Nyeri isn’t far off either, with nighttime lows expected to sit between 10°C and 12°C for most of the week.

Nairobi residents should also expect a chillier few evenings, with night temperatures between 12°C and 14°C. Daytime highs will be more comfortable, ranging from 23°C to 26°C. Machakos follows a similar pattern: nights between 11°C and 13°C, days between 21°C and 25°C.
