KUCCPS Issues Fresh Notice On University Transfers For First-Year Students

Students who missed this year’s inter-university transfer window have been given some breathing room, after the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) confirmed that the door isn’t fully shut.

KUCCPS issued the clarification after the 2026 inter-institutional transfer window closed, addressing confusion among 2025 KCSE candidates who feared they’d lost their chance to switch courses or institutions.

KUCCPS says these students haven’t missed out entirely; they can still apply for a transfer either later this year or in 2027.

“If they sat for KCSE in 2025, they are eligible for transfer this year, 2026, and/or next year 2027,” the agency stated.

The clarification came in response to a wave of queries from students who found themselves shut out of the current cycle but were still hoping to change their institution or course of study.

In practice, this means the 2025 KCSE cohort isn’t stuck with their current placement forever. There’s still room to make a move in a future transfer cycle.

This year’s transfer window opened back in July, covering students already placed in universities as well as those in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions. It wasn’t limited to one cohort either; students from 2023, 2024, and 2025 were all eligible to apply, with KUCCPS setting a firm cut-off date of August 14, 2026.

Now that applications have closed, KUCCPS says it’s working through the backlog. The agency has assured students still waiting to hear back that transfer letters will be issued once processing wraps up.

“The processing of the transfer letters is ongoing. The letter will be generated automatically for download by the applicant through the student portal as soon as it is ready,” KUCCPS said, responding directly to one affected student’s query.

In the meantime, applicants have been urged to keep checking their student portals for updates, since that’s where confirmation of a successful transfer, and the letter itself, will appear. Once the letter is available for download, students will simply need to wait for their institution’s reporting day and head there directly.

The update lands at an interesting moment; freshly placed 2025 KCSE students are only just beginning to report to their institutions for their first year.
