Kenya Power Warns Of Power Interruptions In Parts Of Nairobi As Maintenance Begins

Residents in Roysambu and Githurai should prepare for intermittent power outages over the coming week, Kenya Power has announced, as the company rolls out maintenance work aimed at strengthening the local electricity network.

The company confirmed on Tuesday that its technical teams are already on the ground, working on several transformers serving the two areas under what it has branded the “Boresha Roysambu” initiative.

The exercise is expected to run for roughly a week, wrapping up by the end of September. Work hours have been set for 7am to 5pm, Monday through Saturday, giving crews a full day to inspect equipment and carry out repairs without extending disruptions into the evening.

“Our teams are carrying out planned maintenance works on various transformers in the Roysambu and Githurai areas this week, under the Boresha Roysambu exercise,” the company said in its statement. It added that the work is “focused on maintaining the network and addressing issues that could affect power supply in the area.”

Transformers sit at the heart of any electricity distribution system; they’re what step down power for use in homes and businesses, and when they fail, the disruption can be widespread.

That’s why Kenya Power treats this kind of maintenance as routine but essential: it gives technicians a chance to catch small problems, like wear or overload, before they turn into full-blown outages. Areas like Roysambu, where demand has been climbing steadily, tend to see this kind of work more often simply because the strain on the network is higher.

Kenya Power asked residents to bear with the inconvenience, noting that the goal is a more stable supply in the long run. Businesses in particular have been encouraged to plan around the daytime work window, since that’s when outages are most likely.

The company also reminded customers that they can flag any power issues through its usual channels, either by dialing *977# or via the Kenya Power App, and apologised for any disruption the works might cause.

Roysambu is just one of several areas on Kenya Power’s maintenance schedule this week, with similar works also planned in parts of the Rift Valley, as well as Kisumu, Kirinyaga, Nyeri and Tharaka Nithi counties, as the utility pushes ahead with a broader network upgrade drive across the country.
