NCBA Group Encourages Customers to Integrate Governance and Succession into Long-Term Wealth Planning

As significant amounts of private wealth move towards a new generation of owners, NCBA is urging families and business owners to begin succession and legacy planning early to protect wealth built over decades and ensure its continuity across generations.

The call came as NCBA hosted its Intergenerational Wealth Forum, bringing together families, entrepreneurs, wealth specialists and other stakeholders to explore the financial, legal and governance considerations shaping wealth transition.

Globally, more than US$83 trillion is expected to be transferred over the next two decades, with approximately US$74 trillion projected to move directly between generations. The scale of this transition underscores the importance of preparing families not only to transfer wealth, but also to preserve and grow it.

Africa is also experiencing significant growth in private wealth. According to the Africa Wealth Report 2025, the continent is home to approximately 122,500-dollar millionaires, with this population projected to grow by 65 per cent over the next decade. Kenya has approximately 6,800-dollar millionaires, with about 4,200 residing in Nairobi, making the capital one of Africa’s leading private wealth centers.

In Kenya specifically, over 13,000 succession cases are currently pending before the courts — a strong, concrete local statistic to make the case for proactive estate/succession planning.

Speaking during the engagement, NCBA Group Managing Director John Gachora said the growing pool of wealth makes succession planning an increasingly important part of long-term wealth management.

“Every successful enterprise eventually reaches a point where the conversation must evolve from how wealth is created to how it is preserved, protected and passed on. This transition is happening now, and families need to prepare for it,” said Gachora.

He noted that successful wealth transfer requires more than determining who inherits what, with families needing to consider governance, prepare the next generation and address the legal, tax and investment implications.

“Without deliberate planning, wealth can become a source of complexity rather than opportunity. The greatest legacy is not merely the wealth we leave behind, but the values, continuity and opportunities we pass on. At NCBA, we are honored to help families build, preserve and structure wealth so it continues to empower generations to come,” he said.

Discussions explored key considerations including family business succession, estate planning, governance, investment structures, tax considerations and preparing the next generation for responsible stewardship. Attendees also benefited from specialist perspectives, with experts from institutions including Bowmans and Strategic Consultants Ltd sharing insights on estate planning, governance, legal structures and the transition of family wealth.

NCBA is supporting this journey through a wealth proposition spanning Wealth Management, Life Insurance and Investment Advisory, complemented by specialist partners in legal, tax and estate planning. Its Relationship Managers work with clients to understand their aspirations and connect them to the expertise required to navigate increasingly complex wealth decisions.

Attendees were also given an opportunity to sign up for the NCBA Visa Infinite Card, which offers benefits including global airport lounge access, 24/7 personal concierge services, multi-trip travel insurance and access to the Visa Luxury Hotel Collection.

Beyond wealth management, NCBA continues to be Eastern Africa’s most trusted financial partner for families, supporting clients with solutions and specialist expertise to build, preserve and structure wealth across generations. The approach reflects the Bank’s broader commitment to Banking on Belief, Empowering Ambition, helping customers create lasting legacies and unlock opportunities for future generations.
