Kenyans To Enjoy Free Train Rides As Kenya Railways Announces New Offer

BY Getrude Mathayo · October 8, 2026 01:10 pm

Commuters can travel for free on Kenya Railways trains this week, after the corporation announced complimentary tickets to mark Customer Service Week.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, October 6, Kenya Railways said the offer was made in partnership with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA). The free tickets are available for a limited time only.

Train travel is already among the cheaper ways of getting around, with fares depending on the route and class. On the Nairobi-Nanyuki Safari Train, passengers heading to stations within the Nairobi zone, including Makadara, Dandora, Mwiki, Githurai, Kahawa, Ruiru and Kalimoni, pay a flat Ksh150.

Those going further pay a little more in economy class: Ksh150 to Thika, Ksh160 to Mitubiri, Ksh180 to Makuyu, Ksh200 to Maragua and Ksh250 to Murang’a. Fares then climb to Ksh260 for Sagana, Ksh300 for Karatina, Ksh350 for Kiganjo, Ksh360 for Chaka and Naro Moru, and Ksh400 for Nanyuki.

If the offer is fully implemented, passengers will save between Ksh150 and Ksh400 on each trip. Customer Service Week runs from October 5 to October 9, 2026.

The announcement comes as Kenya Railways continues to upgrade its commuter network. One of the key projects is a rail link to Talanta Sports City Stadium, being developed ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

The work includes upgrading 13 kilometres of existing track between Nairobi Central Station and Satellite, and building a 1.3-kilometre second track between Kibera and Satellite.

The corporation is also putting up new stations at Talanta Stadium and Laini Saba. Pedestrian overpasses and underpasses are being built at Kibera, Laini Saba, Gatwekera and Kambi Muru to make access easier and safer for passengers.
