Govt Declares National Resistance Movement Organised Criminal Group

Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i has declared the National Resistance Movement (NRM) an organised criminal group.

In a Gazette Notice issued on Tuesday, Dr Fred Matiang’i  quoting section 22 of the Prevention of Organised Crimes Act, 2010 said  NRM “…to be an organised criminal group fro the purpose of the Act.”


Section 22 of the Act states: Declaration of an organized criminal group

(1) Where the Minister has reasonable grounds to believe that a specified group is engaged in any organized criminal activity under section 3 of this Act, he may, on the advice of the Commissioner of Police, by notice, declare that specified group an organized criminal group for the purposes of this Act.

(2) Any person aggrieved by the decision of the Minister under this section may apply to the High Court for redress within twenty-one days from the date of publishing the order.

The declaration followed the swearing in of Raila as the People’s president on Tuesday.

In October 2016, the National Super Alliance (NASA) announced that the party will be transformed to National Resistance Movement.

According to the NASA declaration on that day include:  the transformation of the coalition into a resistance movement, concerted campaign to defend democracy, the boycott of goods and services offered by businesses allegedly benefiting from the Kenyatta regime, the convening of people assembly to chart way forward and mobilise movements to ensure a free, fair and credible election is organised  within 90 days.

According to NASA, the People’s Assembly aims at restoring democracy in the country which constitutes of the youth, religious leaders, economic interest groups and the civil society.
