Mumias is found in Kakamega County. It is within that Mumias Sugar Company is located. With this in mind, most residents in this area are small-scale sugarcane farmers. When Mumias Sugar Company collapsed, the majority of them were hit hard.

Nevertheless, sugarcane is still the main cash crop in this region. Mumias Sugar is back on its feet, although they have not started to contract farmers officially. But other factories like Kibos, and Butali have been buying cane from farmers.

If you are considering starting some farming in Mumias, first think of sugarcane. You do not have to own a piece of land. You can just rent one for at least 18 months and renew the lease based on your agreement with the owner.

Other crops that do well in this region are:

  2. Wheat
  3. Upland Rice
  4. Maize

Fruits do well in place. We noticed a number of farmers planting fruits and some of those doing well are:

  1. Grape Fruits
  2. Grapes
  3. Lemons
  4. Lime
  5. Mangoes
  6. Mulberry
  7. Pawpaw
  8. Strawberry

We can advise that you try out Pawpaws and Strawberry. Be in touch with the County Government of Kakamega to help you out in accessing the markets. The Governor has been pushing for.
