TSC Excludes The Following Teachers From JSS Retooling Program
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has excluded primary school teachers assigned to junior secondary school (JSS) classes from the training scheduled to start next week.
In March this year, TSC posted around 7,400 PTE teachers who qualified for deployment to teach grade 7 learners in March. However, TSC says only newly recruited JSS teachers will participate in the training from the 9th to the 13th of October.
According to TSC, a total of 56,000 Grade 7 teachers will start the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) and Competency Based Assessment (CBA) training on Monday next week.
The commission CEO Nancy Macharia has commended teachers who have been participating in the exercise to ensure CBC compliance as well as attend their normal school programs. Macharia spoke during World Teachers’ Day at the Kenya School of Government in Nairobi.

“The Commission celebrates the pre-primary and primary schoolteachers who have embraced the implementation of CBC and are tirelessly assisting the Kenyan learners to acquire the required core competencies and values,” said Macharia
In a memo dated 26th September, addressed to TSC Regional and County Directors, the Commission had listed teachers of language, science, mathematics, humanities, and technical subjects for training.
The training of the teachers will happen in Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs) and other selected county venues. The Grade 7 teacher training will start from 9th to 13th October 2023. However, training of Master Trainers and Trainers of Trainers (TOTs) started earlier.

Master Trainers drawn from TSC, KICD, KNEC, KEMI, CEMASTEA, MOE, KISE, and TTCs started their training from 2nd to 4th October at Kenya Institute of Special Education.
Master Trainers will then train the TOTs (both SNE and regular). Training of TOTs will start from today 6th to 7th October in Teacher Training Colleges and other selected county venues.
TOTs are Curriculum Support Officers (CSOs), Teacher Educators (Tutors), TSC Sub-county directors, and Ministry of Education quality assurance officers.
The training of all participants will be done face-to-face. The training of the teachers comes after TSC posted 18,000 intern teachers to junior secondary in late August and early September.
The training also comes at a time when Grade 7 learners are set to start their national writing assessment in October. Knec has already released the assessments for schools to download, print, and administer to learners.
