Top 5 Things Prayers Can’t Fix In Kenya

KEY POINTS

Kenyans have a habit of electing pathetic and mediocre leaders and then spending the next five years praying for better leadership.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

The price of unga is up. Yes. The price of cooking gas is through the roof. We are feeling it. The price of KPLC tokens is out of this world. Who doesn't know about that? University fees have tripled. So much for "elimu kwa wote". Tell me, how will prayers fix this?

Currently, Kenya has one of the most prayerful governments in the world. Led by President William Ruto, the government seems to be on a mission to make Kenyans believe that most of their problems, including the drought, will be solved through prayers.

It is not bad to pray. In fact, people must and have to believe in something. But there are things that prayers cannot just fix and it is about time we jolted back to this reality. Let us pray to better our journey to Heaven but on the ground, let us be realistic.

However much we cry out to the heavens, prayers will not solve the following:

Bad leadership

Kenyans have a habit of electing pathetic and mediocre leaders and then spending the next five years praying for better leadership. Better leadership in this country can only be fixed at the ballot. As long as we shall continue electing bad leaders, we shall pray forever with no change.

High cost of living

The price of unga is up. Yes. The price of cooking gas is through the roof. We are feeling it. The price of KPLC tokens is out of this world. Who doesn’t know about that? University fees have tripled. So much for “elimu kwa wote”. Tell me, how will prayers fix this?

Fixing the high cost of living is a matter of policy. It 100 percent lies at the doorstep of the government we elected. The Man Above has nothing to do with that. It is the government that has to look at policies that will make lives better.

Drought

Kenya is experiencing the worst drought in history. We know it has something to do with global warming and climate change. But remember when we were told that rain comes from the sky and not from trees? Now we are being told we can pray for the same rain to come.

People are encroaching on forests and water bodies. Rivers are drying up as we watch. People are not planting trees like they used to and the drought is sweeping the country like never before. Get people out of forest lands. Plan trees now.

Ignorance

Ignorance is not a permanent disability. It can be rectified. But not through prayers. Enlighting people on their democratic rights, and their responsibilities as citizens, and lowering the cost and access to education can help heal ignorance.

Healthcare

I know there are preachers who claim to pray and heal people, including this living with HIV/AIDs. But let us face it. It will be too much for everyone to look for pastors to pray for them to heal. Kenya’s healthcare is in a mess and something needs to be done.

Many people in Kenya cannot afford proper healthcare. Some are going to public hospitals just to have hope and die there, not to be treated. There are no medicine and no proper equipment to help millions of poor Kenyans. This should change.
