BY Juma · October 4, 2023 12:10 pm

Netflix is terminating its free streaming plan in Kenya. The move will become effective starting November 1, 2023. Thousands of Kenyan subscribers have been enjoying the free service since 2021. Netflix hoped to use the free subscription to net pay subscribers.

In a statement, Netflix said that once the free service is deactivated, the subscribers’ membership will automatically be canceled and consumers will be required to upgrade to one of the paid plans. This move is likely to see the number of Kenyan subscribers drop.

“On November 1, 2023, the Free Plan will no longer be available and your membership will end. If you want to cancel, no action is required. Your membership will be automatically canceled when the free plan ends,” reads the email sent to subscribers.

The free plan was launched in Kenya on September 2021. It was celebrated as a groundbreaking move by Netflix that made Kenya the first country worldwide to enjoy such a provision. Many also saw it as a way to beat the stiff competition from other streamers.

The plan allowed users to access a limited selection of content without the need for a paid subscription as Netflix sought to tap into the growing streaming market and introduce potential customers to its vast library of movies and TV shows.

To attract more subscribers, on February 21, 2023, Netflix reviewed its prices downwards, explaining that it is offering its customers better value for its money.
