The Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC) has unveiled a major recruitment drive aimed at filling thousands of vacancies in both leadership and teaching positions across the country.

In an announcement made through a public notice on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, TSC confirmed that a total of 21,000 permanent and pensionable positions are available in various senior roles, while an additional 24,000 internship opportunities will be offered to bolster staffing in Junior Secondary Schools.

The 21,000 permanent positions are spread across several leadership and curriculum support categories. These include Chief Principals, Deputy Principals, Senior Teachers, Head Teachers, Deputy Head Teachers and Senior Curriculum Support Officers

According to TSC, these appointments are part of ongoing efforts to strengthen school administration and improve learning outcomes nationwide. Successful applicants will be deployed to schools with existing staffing gaps, with postings determined by where vacancies are most urgent.

TSC has emphasized that all applications must be submitted online via the Commission’s recruitment portal, warning that manual submissions will not be considered under any circumstances. The deadline for applications is Monday, August 25, 2025, after which the portal will be closed for processing and shortlisting.

While calling on eligible Kenyans to seize the opportunity, TSC assured the public that the entire selection process will be conducted fairly and transparently. The Commission reiterated its commitment to equal opportunity, stating that qualified persons living with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply and will be duly considered in line with the Constitution and existing employment policies.

In addition to the leadership positions, TSC has announced 24,000 internship slots aimed at supporting the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in Junior Secondary Schools. These internship programmes are designed to give unemployed qualified teachers a chance to gain valuable classroom experience while easing the teacher shortage in key learning areas.

Internship Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for an internship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be a Kenyan citizen
  2. Possess at least a Diploma in Education from a recognized institution
  3. Have attained a minimum mean grade of C+ (plus) in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE)
  4. Achieve at least a C+ in two teaching subjects
  5. Be registered with the TSC, with proof provided through either a Teacher Registration Certificate or a printout from the TSC portal
  6. Be currently unemployed and have no prior teaching record under the TSC.

The Commission has also stipulated that all interns must have a Personal Accident Insurance cover to protect against risks during the internship period. Selection will be strictly merit-based, taking into account the number of available slots in each county to ensure equitable distribution.

Required Documents for Internship Applicants

Applicants for internship positions must upload or present the following documents during the application process:

  1. Copy of the TSC Registration Certificate or an official printout from the TSC portal.
  2. Copy of the National Identity Card (ID)
  3. Two recent colour passport-size photographs
  4. Copy of the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) PIN certificate.

The internship programme will run for 12 months. While the engagement is not considered permanent employment, interns attached to Junior Secondary Schools will receive a monthly stipend of KSh 20,000 as a token of appreciation for their services.

TSC has underscored that this initiative is part of its broader strategy to address teacher shortages, enhance the quality of education, and provide young professionals with opportunities to develop their skills in a practical environment.
