Synectics Technologies and Schneider Electric Announce Africa’s First Sovereign Supercomputer and AI Factory Ecosystem

Synectics Technologies Limited, a visionary ESG-focused digital infrastructure company, in partnership with Schneider Electric, the global leader in energy management and automation, proudly announces The Aeonian Project, a transformative initiative that positions Uganda at the forefront of Africa’s digital sovereignty.

Located within the 600MW Karuma Hydropower Plant (Karuna-HPP) in Uganda, The Aeonian Project is a Regional next-generation 100MW Hyperscale Green Energy facility focused on the development of Sovereign AI Factories and Supercomputing facilities. The 100 MW capacity has been structured into 6 modules of 15MW per module (KRM1 – KRM6) and 10MW dedicated to supercomputing capabilities.

The first phase of the project comprises a 15MW module and a 10MW Supercomputer. It will begin operations in H2 2026 and be at full capacity by H2 2027. The subsequent modules will be constructed sequentially through 2028, ensuring modular autonomy and scalability.

“By digitalizing clean energy through best-in-class infrastructure, we are empowering Africa to control its data backbone responsibly, sustainably, and sovereignly,” said Oladele Oyekunle, Executive Vice Chairman & CEO, Synectics Technologies.

The 10MW Sovereign Supercomputer, aptly named USIO, the Swahili word meaning infinite. It is Africa’s first sovereign supercomputer. The USIO has been developed in partnership with NVIDIA, MDCS.AI (an NVIDIA Elite Partner), and Automation NV on NVIDIA’s GB300 Blackwell GPU DGX platform in addition to a full (NVIDIA) enterprise AI ecosystem for various Use Case Applications such as Healthcare & Life Sciences, Higher Education & Research etc. The USIO infrastructure is designed for rapid deployment, high density, and energy efficiency, laying the foundation for Africa’s sovereign AI capabilities.

“In the same way gold and oil once shaped economies, digital tokens will shape the next era of innovation. Africa must not just mine data, but also mint intelligence,” said Niels Van Rees, Co-Founder & CCO, MDCS.AI.

The 6-module independent Sovereign  AI Factories (KRM1 – KRM6) will integrate Schneider Electric’s EcoStruxure™ platform, a modular infrastructure suite that combines intelligent power, cooling, and IT management, to ensure optimal performance and sustainability. It also leverages Schneider Electric’s advanced technologies, including Cooling Optimize and IT Advisor CFD, which will help the project meet its ambitious ESG benchmarks, including PUE < 1.2 and WUE < 1.1.

“The Aeonian Project is a bold step toward Africa’s digital sovereignty, and we are proud to support it with Schneider Electric’s smart infrastructure solutions,” said Ifeanyi Odoh, Country President, Schneider Electric East Africa.

“By combining new energy with intelligent cooling and modular data center technologies, we are helping build a future where Africa’s data is processed sustainably, securely, and locally, thanks to the local competencies we are building with our partners in Uganda and across Africa.”

The Aeonion project is supported by global institutions including HAUS (Finland), GIZ (Germany), DIF, EUD, and other European partners.

Unlocking Africa’s Intelligence Economy

Beyond the physical infrastructure, the Aeonian project also includes the launch of a dedicated AI Center of Excellence, the Synectics Center for Artificial Intelligence & Innovation, to be  established in close collaboration with NVIDIA, MDCS.AI and a network of local and international ecosystem partners. This center will focus on skills development, research, and innovation, ensuring that Africa not only builds sovereign AI capacity but also cultivates the talent needed to sustain it.

The Aeonian Project also addresses a critical gap in Africa’s digital economy. Currently, 98% of African data is processed abroad, limiting the continent’s ability to shape its own intelligence. By anchoring compute power locally, the project enables African institutions to build AI models in their natural own languages, grounded in local data and values.

What sets The Aeonian Project apart is its total reliance on off-grid, carbon-neutral energy from the Karuma Hydropower Plant. This long-term energy agreement ensures:

  • 100% renewable energy consumption
  • Natural river water cooling from the Victoria Nile
  • Modular heat reuse and carbon offsets
  • Carrier-neutral network design
  • Strategic connectivity via The Apeiron Project, a 2,500km fiber optic network linking Uganda’s data corridors to submarine cable landing points in Kenya and Tanzania

This makes Aeonian Africa’s largest reservoir of ready green energy dedicated to digital infrastructure, a rare intersection of environmental sustainability and digital sovereignty.

“By anchoring artificial intelligence, green energy, and sovereign compute in East Africa, we are igniting a future where Africa builds and owns its digital destiny,” said Randy Wright, Chairman, Synectics Technologies.
