Govt to Launch 6 Major Road Projects in Western Kenya

Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Infrastructure, Housing and urban Development James Macharia, has announced the launch of major roads in Western Kenya this month in Kakamega, Busia and Bungoma Counties.

On 15th December, 40 Km Kakamega -Webuye road will be re-launched after the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) awarded the tender to Jianxi Zhongmei Engineering. Initially, the tender had been awarded to Vil Limited.

The rehabilitation of the road into a dual carriageway is being funded by the World Bank and KeNHA is the implementing agency. The Government of Kenya had applied for a credit from the International Development Association (IDA) 75 percent of the cost and the government the remaining 25 percent. The project is part of the A1 international highway which starts at Isebania on the Kenya/Tanzania boarder and proceeds northwards to the Kenya/Sudan boarder at Naddapal corridor.

The construction is being executed in three phases: the rehabilitation of the Kisumu to Kakamega road, Kakamega to Webuye and Webuye-Kitale road. The work includes the reconstruction and widening of the existing roads and construction of service roads, access roads and market loops.

On 16th the Ministry will launch the tarmacking of the 28 kilometer Busia – Malaba Road in Busia County.

The same day, the ministry will launch the Malaba – Angurai – Moding’ – Kakamer / Angurai – Rwatama – Malakisi road.  The projects are aimed at connecting the major towns within the county.

In Bungoma, the following roads will be commissioned: Musikoma – Buyofu – Mungatsi roads, Lwakhakha – Korrosiondet – Tulienge – Sirisia – Namwela -Chwela roads, and Kopsiro – Namwela and Kalinda – Cheptais – Chepkube Road.
