A report by the Kenya Population-based HIV Impact Assessment (KENPHIA) revealed that about 1.4 million people in Kenya are living with HIV/AIDS.

KENPHIA survey pointed out that adults recorded a higher number of 1.3million HIV|AIDS cases as compared to children’s 130,000 cases.

The report further states that Kenya is ranked fifth in the world in terms of HIV|AIDS prevalence where women are twice as infected as men.

Rural areas in Kenya recorded the highest rate of HIV|AIDS prevalence as compared to urban areas. Counties along the Lake Victoria region grabbed the top slots.

National HIV prevalence stood at 4.9 percent which reveals that the Nyanza region recorded way above the average. Most counties in the Nyanza region recorded over 10 percent of the prevalence rate.

Questions could be asked why counties near Lake Victoria have been having the highest number of people living with HIV/AIDS. Could it be because of the lake, the outdated traditional practices like wife inheritance or it is just bad luck?

However, the report is not very accurate since data around the Northeastern regions was not reliable.

Garissa county data could not be verified since a number of respondents did not give their feedback hence a lower record in the North-Eastern regions. Garissa County recorded only 0.1 percent of the HIV prevalence.

Wajir and Mandera both recorded 0.2 percent while Marsabit and Isiolo recorded 1.2 and 2.2 percent respectively.

Kiambu County was among the counties that recorded the lowest rate of HIV/AIDS prevalence. The county recorded only 1.1 percent.

Here are the top ten counties with the highest HIV/AIDS prevalence rate

  1. Homa Bay county- 19.6 percent
  2. Kisumu county- 17.5 percent
