Government Set to Add 3000 More TVET Trainers

There has been continued growth of TVET institutions, especially now that the government has increased the number from 52 in 2013 to 238 in 2021 at 10 billion shillings.

The Principal Secretary in the State Department for Vocational and Technical training, Dr. Margaret Mwakima, has said that the government is set to add 3000 more TVET trainers to curb the shortage of tutors in the various institutions across the country.

There has been continued growth of the institutions, especially now that the government has increased the number from 52 in 2013 to 238 in 2021 at 10 billion shillings.

“Due to the 10.3 billion capitation government and 11.1 billion HELB loans to TVET trainees since 2019, there has been an increase in enrollment from 55,945 in 2013 to 249,316 in 2021”, said Mwakima.

So far, 192 institutions are operational while 49 are nearly completed according to PS Margaret Mwakima.

The PS further noted that there are currently 12 National Polytechnics and plans are underway to establish nine more to increase Centers of Excellence in the TVET sector.

There has been a provision to equip 214 engineering workshops in the192 operational institutions with stat of the art training equipment at the total cost of sh. 24 billion to ensure that there is quality and relevance of the TVET institutions.

In addition to this, the State Department Is refurbishing four Special TVET institutions at a total cost of sh. 800 million to promote equity and participation in the TVET sector.

Speaking at Ramogi Institute of Advanced Technology (RIAT) in Kisumu during the commissioning of a driving school, Mwakima noted that the state has invested heavily in the TVET sector in terms of infrastructure, and highly skilled trainers to improve the quality of education offered in the institutions.

The PS advised the youth to seize this available opportunity to acquire necessary lifelong skills and competencies that will enable them to compete favorably in the workplace.
