Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is targeting to train 100,000 taxpayers on how to file their annual returns on iTax.

The Authority has rolled out a countrywide iTax training program that is targeting among other places, churches, businesses and shopping centers.

KRA’s Commissioner, Domestic Taxes, Alice Owuor says the program aims to encourage Kenyans to file their returns with ease ahead of the June 30th deadline.

“Our nationwide outreach program has been well received with many Kenyans now using the iTax platform to file their returns,” said Owuor.

KRA has already launched the training program in Nairobi targeting busy shopping Malls including Sarit Centre, Thika Road Mall, Greenspan Mall, Prestige Plaza, Junction Mall, Nakumatt Lifestyle and T-Mall.

“Through the outreach program, it is our hope that all Kenyans will not only be exposed to the new system but gain knowledge on utilizing the iTax platform which is user-friendly, convenient and efficient. We would like to encourage Kenyans to embrace the iTax system, and enjoy the ease and convenience that it will bring to their lives,” said Owuor.

“I would like to inform members of the public that they can receive iTax support through KRA’s Service Centers and also file returns at all Huduma Centers across the country where one can seek assistance and direction wherever they face challenges,” she concluded.

The iTax System is a web-based application that gives taxpayers the luxury of filing returns from the comfort of their homes or offices at any hour of day or night. The current system allows taxpayers to file returns for Pay As You Earn (PAYE), Value Added Tax (VAT), Individual annual Income Tax Return (IT1), and agency revenue that includes Sugar Development Levy and Kenya Bureau of Standards.

The iTax System has several in-built security features, among them one which requires taxpayers to provide an e-mail address that is unique for every PIN registered. The threshold for the creation of a password has also been strengthened and the taxpayers are at liberty to determine the strength of their passwords. A security question that authenticates the rightful user on the issuance of a new password has also been introduced. The security stamp provided upon login will prevent phishing programs that may attempt to hack into the taxpayers’ data, an effort that will ensure that personal and professional data of users is protected.

Assistance on the iTax System is also available at the cyber cafes within Huduma Centres that provide various government services under one roof.
