At one point in life someone has searched for you online, without your knowledge. Do you ever wonder how your image is portrayed online? What the internet says about you is very important, because it is a source of both personal and professional survey.

Most searches that involve someone’s name often results in direct connection to social media platforms, like Facebook, twitter and Instagram.

Today, employers too, search for background details without candidates’ knowledge, and some even opt to use social media as a recruitment medium. Previously, they only relied on the job seeker’s references. But now they can actually go online and see what people are saying about you.

If you have never googled yourself, maybe that’s what you should do next. You never know, maybe a silly photo that you took last Christmas could tarnish your name, or someone may have hacked your account and used it to post indecent images and information.

This are the kind of internet crimes that have not yet been fully controlled, therefore, you are not safe, but constant checking on your online presence could save you.

Here are some few steps to follow to clean up your online presence.

  • Search for your name and see what comes up. Don’t take anything for granted, find out if something damaging has been posted without your knowledge.
  • Ask yourself, would I hire myself? Don’t give employers a reason to weed you out. Check for anything that could be negative on all your social media platforms.
  • If you have any online drama and don’t want a lot of people to know about it, add positive information to the internet so that positive results come first.
  • Make sure your social media represents you perfectly.
