Winners of DStv Eutelsat Star Awards Announced

The winners of this year’s DStv Eutelsat Star Awards have been announced during a ceremony that was marred with pomp and color held at Radisson Blu Hotel in Nairobi.

This was the fifth year the competition was being held with this year’s edition being hailed as the most competitive nearly 2000 entries from 18 countries Kenya being one of them.

Ayawen Asuinura from Ghana was the winner for essay category and has won a trip to Paris France and will also witness the live launch of a rocket as it ventures into the space to place a satellite into orbit, 36000 kilometers above the earth and Sara Eribo from Equatorial Guinea came in second in the essay category and also won a trip for two to visit MultiChoice facilities and the South African National Space Agency near Johannesburg.

Mallon Marume from Zimbabwe took the top position for presenting the best poster that appealed to the judges. The winner in this category will visit Eutelsat in Paris to understand how satellites are operated and piloted in space and the many ways they benefit their users while Benjamin Ibanda from Uganda came in second in the posters category.

Paolo Nespoli, an ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut was the chair of the jury of the Awards for the third year in a row, with other panelists being, Ronke Bello, CEO at Innovative Technology Literacy Services Ltd, Nigeria; Dr Jane Munga, Policy Advisor, Kenyan Ministry of Information, Communication, Technology and Research, Kenya; Dr Perkins Muredzi, Dean of School of Industrial Sciences and Technology, Harare Institute of Technology (HIT), Zimbabwe; Melt Loubser, GM: Broadcast Technology, MultiChoice Africa and Rodney Benn, Regional Director, Eutelsat.
