One of the most amazing creations of nature are the mountains and Bungoma County is blessed to harbour one of those fascinating sceneryies; Mount Elgon.

The mountain which spreads all the way to the neighbouring Uganda is one of the nature given investment opportunity that Kenya has not realized and tapped into it. The County Government of Bungoma too seems not to have realized the amazing investment opportunities that are hosted by this mountain.

First, the mountain has one of the most fertile soils in the region. Ask those who practice farming on Mount Elgon and they will tell you how fertile the soil is to the extent that majority of them rarely use fertilizer to grow. Agriculture on and around this mountain is yet to be fully utilized both by the government and the locals. Apart from the insecurity though contained that still reigns the regions, the roads are in a dilapidated condition. Most farmers in this region plant onions but taking their crops on the market is usually a trip through hell on foot as the roads are often impassable especially during the rainy season.

Second, the mountain has numerous waterfalls which if well harnessed can either be used to attract tourists or generate electricity. These water falls, more than ten of them, have never been utilized for decades, their water keep on flowing season in, season out awaiting to be tapped and used for something profitable and useful.

Third, Mount Elgon has numerous and fascinating caves that are lying without generating any revenue. It is said that Mount Elgon has one of the largest caves that runs through from Kenya to Uganda. Back in the days when Sabaot Land Defence used to terrorize the region, it is said that they used to hide in this cave. The County Government can make these caves tourist’s attractions by making sure that the region is accessible as well as working in conjunction with the national government in ensuring that there is security in the region.

These are just but a few investment opportunities underutilized and around Mount Elgon. This is a sleeping lion that only needs a whip on its back to be up unleashing its potential.
