Six-lane Nairobi-Nakuru Highway to Cost 16.4 Billion

Engineering firm China Wu Yi Construction Company Limited will be the main contractor for the expansion Nairobi-Nakuru highway at a cost of Sh 16.4 billion.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) in a statement on Wednesday said the contract is for the reconstruction and capacity enhancement of James Gichuru Junction Road – Rironi, a section of the (A8) Highway.

“The reconstruction works of the 25 kilometer section has been awarded to China Wu Yi Co. Ltd,” read the statement.

“The project is expected to ease traffic flow into and out of the city of Nairobi, and is one of the three major projects earmarked to decongest the city along the Northern Corridor alignment,” the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) Director General Peter Mundinia said in a statement Wednesday.

The project will be financed by the World Bank Group and the Government of Kenya under the National Urban Transport improvement Project (NUTRIP) and will take a period of 36 months to complete.

According to the statement, those who will be affected by the project the resettlement action plan will be carried out in the next 12 weeks.

Key deliverables for the contractor will be: to expand the highway to a six lane highway, construction of 44km of service roads 6m wide, construction of 3.4m wide non-motorised transport lanes on either side of the entire length of highway to enhance road users and safety and to promote cost effective transportation, construction of 21 pedestrian overpasses and 5 underpasses, construction of 13 bridges at interchange locations and the upgrading of approximately 16km of collector roads to paved standard to provide connectivity to communities living adjacent to the project road.

Early this month, China Wu Yi Construction Company Limited, the main contractor for Thika Super-highway, was contracted to build the 135 KM Garsen-Witu-Lamu road at a cost of Sh10.4 billion.
