School Children Should be Taught Traffic Rules

BY Juma · August 15, 2016 07:08 am

Recent cases where numerous school buses have been involved in grisly road accidents are quite saddening.

Not long ago, some students of a secondary school in Kisii lost their lives while scores others left nursing their injuries when their bus overturned. It was said that the students were celebrating the purchase of their new bus which had just been delivered.

This came just a few months after another road accident in the same county claimed lives of six university students and left other with serious injuries.

Many tongues have been left wagging about this but none seems to addressing the source of the problem.

For many years, school buses ferrying students have been flouting traffic rules without stern actions being taken against them. Many school buses are often packed to brim with students.

Some students are usually rowdy during their school trips, shouting and howling while keeping their heads out of the windows of their buses. Drivers of such school buses are taken over by excitement sometimes and forget that they ate carrying students.

In most schools, students are the ones who determine the speed at which they want their school drivers to drive. The majority force their drivers to drive their buses at maximum speeds and this has been a major cause of accidents among school buses.

For the case of Kisii for incidence, the students were overexcited for their new bus. Their driver in the same excitement over-sped and led to the fatal accident.

It is high time that school children are taught about the traffic rules in the country. Traffic police officers too should be ready to take any action against any school bus that will be found flouting traffic rules.

The Soko Directory Investments team would like to send their sincere condolences to all the families that lost their loved ones while wishing those injured a quick recovery.
