How The Transport Sector is Transforming the Economy of Kiambu

BY Juma · August 9, 2016 06:08 am

There is nothing as important to the economy of a place as a good transport system. A place that has a well-coordinated transport system has more tangible developments that an area that has none.

When a place has good and well-maintained roads, business opportunities are more and most sectors thrive. People are able to reach to their work places on time, farmers are able to transport their farm produce to the markets on time, factories are able to transport raw materials from the field to the factories as well as finished products to the markets and to the consumers.

Good transport system is good for the better education too. Children as well as teachers are able to reach to the learning institutions on time and schools are located in places that they are easily accessible. When devolution came into being, some of the responsibilities in the transport sector were placed under the docket of county governments. County Governments are in charge of constructing and maintaining county roads.

Kiambu County took this new responsibility seriously and at the moment, 1200 kilometers of county roads have been constructed, rehabilitated and completed. This gives an average of 15 to 20 kilometers of roads per each ward. The County Government of KiambuĀ  targets to have built and completed 3500 kilometers of roads by the year 2018.

There is also a routine maintenance that is ongoing in this county. I happened to pass by and discovered that there was grading, bush clearing, culvert cleaning as well as spot gravel that continuously goes all in making sure that the county has good and accessible roads. The County Government targets to continue with this spot and graveling with the accomplishment of 4500 kilometers of roads per year.

There are also what engineers call bituminous roads. At the moment, in Kiambu County, 40 kilometers of them have been rehabilitated and upgraded with a target of 200 kilometers of them by the year 2018.
