Weekly Turnover Declines by 54 Percent

Total weekly turnover declined 53.9% w-o-w to USD 17.5 MN (KES 1.8 BN). NSE 20 was down 0.9% w-o-w closing the week at 3,449.44 while NASI index settled at 143.86 (down 0.1% w-o-w).

The Banking sector saw a price drop of 2.9% w-o-w with National Bank and Housing Finance Bank recording a 14.4% and a 8.7% w-o-w decline to close the week at KES 7.45 and KES 17.40 respectively.

National Bank recorded an 82.0% drop in PAT to KES 311.3MN while Housing Finance recorded a 26.3% y-o-y growth in PAT to KES 612.5 MN. The Banking sector accounted for 28.8% of the week’s turnover while Safaricom accounted for 27.1% of the week’s turnover.

The Week’s Turnover

The week’s turnover stood at USD 43.4 MN (KES 4.4 BN), down 31.3 % w-o-w from last week’s USD 63.2 MN (KES 6.4 BN). The most actively traded bond was the infrastructure bond, issue number IFB 1/2016/9yr, which traded between 13.0654% and 13.1578 % during the week, accounting for 34.2% of the week’s turnover.

The Government of Kenya is issuing a 10 year bond, looking to raise KES 25.0 BN in support of the budget. Auction date will be on 23rd August 2016 at 2.00pm. Secondary trading to commence on 30th August 2016.

Uganda:

The USE ALSI and USE LSI lost 2.4% and 0.7% w-o-w to close at 1,633.43 and 386.19 respectively. Total weekly turnover came to a close at UGX 191.95 MN. Uganda Clays emerged top loser, declining 13.3% w-o-w to close at UGX 13.00.

Rwanda:

The RSE RSI and RSE ALSI rose 1.33% and 0.17% w-o-w to close at 136.84 and 129.36 respectively. Total turnover RWF 92.1MN.

Tanzania:

The DSEI declined 5.3% w-o-w to close at 2,668.75 while DSE TSI went up 2.4% w-o-w to close at 4.005.81. African Barrick Gold lost 16.9% w-o-w to emerge the weeks top loser, closing the day at TZS 16,640.00. Total turnover closed at TZ 2.1 BN. DSE on the other hand emerged as the weeks top gainer, going up 20.0% w-o-w to close at TZS 1,500.00
