CBK 50th Anniversary Celebrations to Conclude on Wednesday

The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) 50th anniversary celebrations will conclude in an Epic Event scheduled for Wednesday, September 14, 2016, at the Nairobi National Museum. Several invited guests will grace the occasion including Cabinet Secretaries, Permanent Secretaries and other Government officials. Also invited are stakeholders from the financial sector, representatives from international organizations and central bankers from the region and around the world.

During this Event, the CBK will launch a Numismatic Museum at the Nairobi National Museum. The exhibition will not only showcase current currencies but also various historical currencies over the 50 years of CBK’s existence. The display includes notes and coins from the East African Currency Board era as well as Kenya’s first post-independence legal tender. A special section of the exhibition will be dedicated to young learners.

Prior to the Event, a series of activities are being undertaken. A high level research symposium themed “50 Years of Central Banking” will be held on Tuesday, September 13, 2016. The symposium brings together local and international economists, bankers, researchers, members of the academia and other stakeholders to exchange ideas on important policy issues of interest to central banks. These include the evolution central banking, financial stability and the role central banking in financial inclusion.

Additionally, from Sunday, September 11, 2016, selected television stations will air a unique documentary on the CBK. This documentary details the faces behind the success of the CBK and also highlights key achievements and lessons learnt over the last 50 years as well as the CBK’s vision for the next 50 years.

The CBK 50th anniversary celebrations have so far been anchored on the youth. To this end, several activities have been held including the recently concluded Kenya Music Festival and the Mathare Youth Empowerment Programme. An Art Competition for primary and high school students was also held in collaboration with the National Museums of Kenya and the Kenya Bankers Association.
