Kenya Airways is Kenya’s national carrier that has been rocking the skies since the year 1977 after the disintegration of the then East African Airways which was as a result of the disintegration of the East African Union.

Since then, the pride of Africa has been scaling the heights, flying the Kenyan flag around the world, connecting Africa to the world and the world to Kenya and still going strong.

The first flight in history was on 4th of February 1977 from Nairobi to London using Boeing 707-321 which had been leased from the British Midland Airways. Since that first destinations, the national carrier now flies to more than 50 destinations around the world.

The airline may have had a share of its troubles but it is coming up and coming up fast with already 75 percent of the losses having been done away with and with plans of coming back to profitability in the next few months being made real.

Some of the countries the Kenyan flag flies high courtesy of Kenya Airways are:

  • Angola in the city of Luanda
  • Benin in the city of Cotonou
  • Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso
  • Bujumbura in Burundi
  • Douala in Cameroon
  • Yaounde in Cameroon
  • Central African Republic in the city of Bangui
  • China
  • Comoros
  • Ivory Coast
  • Democratic Republic of Congo in Kinshasa, Kisngani and Lubumbashi.
  • Djibouti
  • Equatorial Guinea
  • Ethiopia
  • France
  • Gabon
  • Ghana
  • Hong Kong
  • India

These are just part of the destinations that Kenya Airways operates. Locally, the pride of Africa still rocks flying in towns like Mombasa and Kisumu through partnerships to some of towns like Malindi. Early this month, the airline signed a code-share deal with India’s Jet Airways between Mumbai and New Delhi.

The new chairman, a veteran in the telecommunication industry, Michael Joseph has said that he will invest more in motivating the staff and making sure that the turnaround strategy is fully implemented.
