Insurance Regulatory Authority Appoints Godfrey Kiptum as New CEO

The Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) has appointed Mr.Godfrey Kiptum to serve in the positions of Chief Executive Officer and Acting Commissioner of Insurance.

Kiptum replaces Sammy Makove, who has been serving in the position for the last 15 years as Commissioner of Insurance and Chief Executive Officer, who is proceeding on terminal leave pending the expiry of his contract.

Makove served as the first CEO of IRA and has served two terms, each made up of 4 years. Prior to the establishment of IRA, Makove was the Commissioner of Insurance at the then Department of Insurance in the Ministry of Finance.

IRA Board Chairman Hon. Abdirahim H. Abdi made the announcement during a staff briefing session and thanked Makove for his diligent service to the insurance industry.

“On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank Mr. Makove for his service to IRA and the insurance industry. Through his leadership, we have witnessed growth and development in the industry and we wish him well as he moves on pursue other interests”, he said.

Until his appointment as Acting CEO, Kiptum has been IRA’s Chief Manager for Human Capital Development and Administration and has worked at IRA for the last 8 years.

Kiptum brings in a wealth of experience having worked in various State Agencies over the last 20 years.He holds an MBA from ESAMI/Maastricht MSM University is an Associate of the Life Management Institute of USA (ALMI). He is also a member of the Chartered Insurance Institute of UK.

The Insurance Regulatory Authority is a statutory government agency that is mandated with regulating, supervising and developing the insurance industry. It is governed by a Board of Directors which is vested with the fiduciary responsibility overseeing operations of the Authority and ensuring that they are consistent with provisions of the Insurance Act.
