Cameroon Emerges Victorious in 2017 African Cup of Nations

It is said that what people say about you does not define you but your character and what you believe in does and this was evident during the 2017 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals held in Gabon on Sunday night.

The much-anticipated final was between Cameroon and Egypt with all indications showing that the Pharaohs were going to emerge as victors. Some even loudly confirmed that the gods had chosen Egypt as this year’s African Cup of Nation champions.

The Cameroonian team had already been dismissed by many including their former players as pathetic, weak and indiscipline and one that could not restore the eroding football glory of Cameroon but the team turned the tables when it hammered the Pharaohs 2 goals to 1. (2-1) in a densely-packed Stadium.

Mohamed Elnemy put Eqypt ahead during the first half, killing the ecstasy from thousands of fans who had travelled by bus from Yaounde in Cameroon to watch their national team play. Their hope, however resurrected and renewed during the second half when Nicolas Nkoulou levelled the pride of the Pharaohs making it 1-1 and when it was only two minutes to the final whistle, Vincent Aboubakar hammered the last nail on the coffin with a goal that snatched the hope from the Pharaohs of being this year’s champions.

According to many football fans, this year’s AFCON did not accompany all the fun as it had earlier been hyped. This was so because there was no single television in Kenya that showed a single live match. Initially, Kenya Broadcasting Cooperation (KBC) used to air the matches but this year, it did not manage to secure the license.

Those in the betting industry may have made a kill on Sunday because most of the football lovers seem to have placed their bets for Egypt.
