James Oswago and Trevy Oyombra Arrested Over Chickengate Scandal

Former electoral commission chief executive officer James Oswago alongside Trevy Oyombra and Hamida Ali Kibwana have been arrested by detectives from Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, EACC, on Wednesday morning over the Chickengate Scandal.

The three have been arrested over the 46-million-shilling bribery scandal that is about the 2010 referendum tender of ballot papers that they received to favor a UK based company. The three are now being held at the EACC headquarters awaiting to be presented in court.

Pressure has been mounting on the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, EACC, to prosecute the masterminds of the infamous Chickengate scandal with concerns being raised as to whether there were sacred cows in the country when it came to the fighting of corruption.

The United Kingdom already prosecuted those who gave the bribe to Kenyan officials but the officials who received the bribe in Kenya are yet to be prosecuted despite the fact that the Serious Fraud Office in the United Kingdom has handed over the files with full evidence showing how the offence was committed and those who benefitted.

Mr. Oswago, during the previous interrogations with the EACC, has always claimed that he was being used as a sacrificial lamp to shield the bigwigs within the commission and who benefitted from the scandal. Oswago, however, did not name the said bigwigs and all eyes are now set on the EACC to see how it will handle the matter.

The EACC is also on the spot over the National Youth Service scandal where more than 1 billion shillings are said to have been looted. Various suspects in the scandal have been interrogated and even some such as Josephine Kabura admitted to have benefited from the loot, carrying millions of cash in bags but they have never been prosecuted. The commission is now under the retired archbishop Eliud Wabukala and Kenya is waiting to see if the Man of God will bring in any tangible change.
