Corruption and Food Security Among Major Issues Affecting Kenya

Kenyan youth are more concerned about corruption and food security in the country according to a study conducted by GeoPoll with four out of ten respondents identifying with them as important issues affecting the economy.

According to the study, 43 percent of Kenyan youth are concerned about the rampant corruption in Kenya, 32 percent are concerned about unemployment, 43 percent about food security, 34 percent were concerned about health care, 16 percent about insecurity, 15 percent were worried about poverty while 16 percent are concerned about high prices of goods.

Other issues of concern included insecurity at 16 percent, poverty at 15 percent, high commodity prices at 15 percent and workers strikes at 6 percent. These issues are not new to youth; when asked which issues affected them the most in the last two years, a majority of youth picked unemployment at 25 percent and corruption at 23 percent.

Looking forward, youth identified unemployment—by half of all respondents—to have the biggest impact on their future, followed by corruption.

In order to address issues affecting them, one-third or 34 percent of respondents noted that they post on social media. Others organize and or attend events and sign petitions. When asked why they might act, more than half of the respondents stated that the engagement means need to be easier.

Others cited safety and motivation as key drivers. 59 percent identified safety while 45 percent indicated that a leader they believed in would help them act. The family is also a key motivator to taking action; 47 percent indicated that family motivates them to take action on the most important issues to them.
