Elections can be costly and destructive. Despite presenting negativity, it comes with opportunities for entrepreneurs.
So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the campaign and election period creates big business opportunities for many in Kenya to cash on. From PR practitioners, speech coaches, entertainers and bodyguards to campaign merchandise manufacturers, car and truck distributors and advertising agencies.
Even with the high risk and destruction that comes with elections most of the entrepreneurs if not all, see opportunities in the dark clouds that could come their way.
A number of businesses flourish during the campaign and election period;
Social Media Management; media strategists use their influence on the social platforms such as Facebook and twitter to gunner support for candidates who hire them. This way media strategist are able to make some extra money.
Printing T-shirts; this is a business that booms during the election period. Most political aspirants have the hope to get to the hearts of the voters and many opt to print their photos and names on T-shirts which are given out to the voters. As you all know, whatever you see gets embroidered on the mind more than what you hear.
Car and truck hire; during this season the car and truck hire business is on the rise. Aspiring politicians hire vehicles for easy movement from region to the other with the hope of convincing voters to vote for them over the other. Also, politicians hire trucks for advertisement purposes and to transport voter from one place to the other.
Selling bottled water; entrepreneurs carry big loads of bottled water in trucks and sell them especially where there are rally crowds. This is a business that flourishes during the election periods, rallies with a massive number of people are a great potential.
Photocopy and printing business; posters and billboards are everywhere, each street, each business enterprise and even on the roadsides. Apart from the posters and the billboards manifestos are also printed seeing a boom in the business.
Hotel business; this is so especially when voters are given a money by politicians, they think of their stomachs first and not investment. Also, politicians do dinner and hold events at hotels giving the hotel management business some new vibe.
Tents and plastic chairs; massive rallies and campaigns come with many political officials ranging from political aspirants, bodyguards, to personal assistants who use tents and plastic chairs. The business flourishes during events only.
Pubs; people gather at pubs to talk about their favorite political aspirants and politics in general. These conversations are done over a glass of alcohol and cigarettes. With every bottle of liquor that’s consumed, the owner of the bar crashes in profit.
